Medical ethics is based on the four principles of beneficence; non-maleficence; autonomy and justice. Attempts at resolving conflicts from simultaneous adherence to the four principles and balancing the issues concerning that particular situation against optimal ethical action form the basis for many of our ethical dilemmas. Practising professionals are comfortable with cut-and-dried choices, yes or no answers. Ethical issues force us into gray areas.
