South Asia Bioethics Community (SABC) – Reading Session

South Asian Bioethics Community (SABC) is a forum that brings healthcare ethics peers from South Asia together. Our meetings will take the form of seminars, reading sessions, and panel discussions on topics relevant to healthcare ethics each month (3rd Thursday at 6:30 pm).

Our first reading session is on Jan 19th at 6.30 PM IST.

The purpose of this session will be to critically engage with the literature on female genital cutting” and “female genital cosmetic surgeries” to understand the double standards of ethics. While one is considered an extreme form of human rights violation, the other is considered a matter of individual choice, when the two procedures have significant overlap in their process and outcome. The double standards that we observe stem from other contributing factors- racism, sexism, ethnocentrism. During this reading session, we hope to discuss ways to erase these double standards.
