Dr George Thomas is Head of Emergency Services and Chief Orthopaedic Surgeon, St. Isabel’s Hospital, Chennai. Dr Thomas did his MBBS from the Kilpauk Medical College, Chennai, India, and a Diploma in Orthopaedics from the Trivandrum Medical College, Kerala, and has a PhD in Orthopaedics. He has previously worked as Orthopaedic Surgeon at the ESI Hospital, Kollam, Kerala; and at the Southern Railway Hospital, Chennai.

He has been interested in medical ethics from his student days. Dr Sunil Pandya’s “Letters from Mumbai” in the National Medical Journal of India prompted him to write to Dr. Pandya. This brought him into contact with the Forum for Medical Ethics and the bulletin Medical Ethics, which evolved into the Indian Journal of Medical Ethics. He was Editor, Indian Journal of Medical Ethics, from October 2005 to January 2011, and is currently a member of its Editorial Board. He has written frequently on medical ethics issues both in medical journals and in the mainstream media.
