Ayurveda originated for the preservation of human lives so that they may be dedicated without hindrance to austeritv. meditation and discinlinc of mind. It is the feeling of love and compassion for suffering humanity that first gave rise to the sages' efforts to discover the science of medicine. (Caraka sutra VI, 7)
